Evaluation

How to evaluate file streaming with a real project

Discover file streaming’s value through a real project: earlier useful work, shared access and a clear collaborator handoff.

See file streaming at work in a real project

Discover where Suite can help your team reach the first useful edit, open shared assets and collaborate with less file preparation. A real-project pilot makes those benefits tangible: use familiar applications, representative files and the handoffs your team depends on. Record first and repeated access separately to understand how streaming and the local cache support the work.

Use the method below to discover the result in your own environment; outcomes depend on the project and setup.

Write a one-page evaluation brief

Identify the application and version, file formats, representative file sizes, active project size, collaborators and storage location. Describe the current delay in concrete terms: waiting to open a timeline, searching for an asset, preparing media for another location, or reading files for a processing job.

Then choose the interface each task needs. An editing application may need filesystem paths. An object-aware service may already use an S3 API. With S3 Native, these are separate access paths to consider; a successful API read does not demonstrate the performance of an application using the mounted drive.

Keep the comparison fair

Use the same host, application version, project files and connection for the comparison where possible. Record the cache location, available space and whether the test files have already been accessed. Note changes that cannot be held constant rather than attributing every difference to the storage product.

Do not clear caches that other work depends on just to manufacture a first-read test. Use an authorized test set and agree on how the initial state will be established. Keep the original data available until the evaluation and any migration are verified.

Measure three stages of work

  1. First useful interaction: time from opening the project to a specific action, such as seeing the required frame or opening the intended asset. Define the action before measuring.

  2. Sustained interaction: repeat a short, representative sequence of scrubbing, browsing, opening or processing. Record interruptions and errors as well as elapsed time.

  3. Saving and handoff: perform an authorized test write and verify its completion through Suite. Confirm that the intended collaborator can access the result with the expected permissions.

Record the first run separately from later runs. If the workflow involves more than one location, repeat the same tasks from each relevant location instead of extrapolating from one fast connection.

Include operational fit

A responsive project still needs a workable operating model. Check how much local SSD space the working set needs, who manages access, what happens when a host restarts, and how the team confirms uploads before disconnecting.

For agents, identify the supported runtime, authentication method and human responsible for authorizing installation, data access and spending. Suite documents headless Linux installation and a client CLI, but those documents do not establish every container runtime or an account-provisioning API.

Decide using an agreed threshold

Write down the improvement the team needs before the pilot. A decision might require opening a representative project within a target time, completing a defined editing sequence without unacceptable interruption, and verifying a cross-location handoff. Your thresholds should come from the work, not an invented universal benchmark.

Summarize results with the environment and limitations attached. Keep inconclusive results visible. A single successful project supports a decision about that tested setup; it does not guarantee the same result for every file, application or network.

Put the idea to work

Start with your workflow.

Bring shared files into your familiar applications with Suite Managed, or connect your own supported storage with S3 Native. S3 Native requires at least 20 TB of active storage.
